How to Measure your Kitchen for DIY Fittings

Here are some tools on how to design your own kitchen. To start with you need accurate measurements. Once you have accurately measured your kitchen, you can use our simple kitchen planner to lay out your kitchen units.

Measuring Your Kitchen

Design your kitchen in 4 easy steps:

  1. Take precise measurements (as described below).
  2. Transfer this information to the 1:20 kitchen planning grid.
  3. Select the units you require from the kitchen unit planner and place them on the grid.
  4. Place wall units shapes directly on top of the floor units.

Measuring Your Kitchen

  1. Draw a rough floor plan of your kitchen as if you were looking down on it, indicating where the doors, pillars, windows and serving hatches are - as illustrated below.
  2. Carefully measure the total length of the walls from one end to the other.
  3. Measure the distance of the walls between windows, doors, arches and serving hatches.
  4. Measure the size of the doors, windows, arches and serving hatches.( Include the height from the floor in the case of windows and serving hatches.
  5. Show the locations of any pillars and measure their size and distance from a fixed point.
  6. If you don’t want to move plumbing and electrics, show where you want your hob, oven, fridge, sink and other major appliances. Also, measure where the existing plug points are.
  7. Measure the ceiling height and any beams that may be in your kitchen.
  8. Measure all your major appliances height, width and depth - Fridge, Washing Machine, Tumble Dryer.
  9. If you have an existing oven and hob measure their height and width. This is particularly important if you want an eye level oven.

With this information our professional design team will assist you and design a kitchen using a CAD program. Our design team will be able to give you three-dimensional picture to scale, of what your new kitchen will look like.
